Merchant Ship Registration
Ships registration in Gibraltar is governed by the Gibraltar Shipping Ordinance (similar to the UK Merchant Shipping Act 1994). The main categories of ships registered in Gibraltar are Passenger, Container Vessels, General Cargo Vessels and Product Carriers. These vessels must be approved by one of the six major Classification Societies approved by the Government of Gibraltar.

Vessels over twenty years old require a 'pre-flagging-in' condition survey prior to their being considered for registration.

Vessels may be registered either on 'Bareboat Charter' or on a permanent basis.
